About the role

We are looking for a friendly, organised and motivated Volunteer Coordinator to help us recruit, welcome and support volunteers across our activities in Selby and York. Some tasks can be completed remotely.

You will work closely with the Shine of Hope and Peace team to make sure volunteers have a positive experience and receive the information, guidance and support they need to carry out their roles effectively.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining experience in volunteer management, charity work, community development or project coordination. Training and ongoing support will be provided.

Main responsibilities

As Volunteer Coordinator, you will help to:

  • Promote volunteering opportunities and support the recruitment of new volunteers.
  • Respond to enquiries from people interested in volunteering with us.
  • Arrange informal interviews or introductory meetings with prospective volunteers.
  • Support volunteer induction and onboarding.
  • Help ensure volunteers complete relevant documentation and checks, including DBS checks where required.
  • Match volunteers with suitable roles based on their skills, interests and availability.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential volunteer records.
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers about sessions, activities and upcoming opportunities.
  • Help organise volunteer rotas and ensure activities have appropriate volunteer support.
  • Check in with volunteers and identify any additional support or training they may need.
  • Help organise volunteer meetings, training and development opportunities.
  • Encourage volunteers to provide feedback about their experience.
  • Recognise and celebrate volunteers' contributions to the organisation.
  • Work with staff and other volunteers to maintain a friendly, inclusive and supportive volunteering environment.
  • Follow the charity's safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and other relevant policies.

Who we are looking for

You do not need previous experience as a Volunteer Coordinator. We are particularly interested in someone who is:

  • Friendly, approachable and confident communicating with different people.
  • Well organised and able to manage different tasks.
  • Reliable and able to maintain regular communication with volunteers.
  • Comfortable using email and basic Microsoft Office or Google applications.
  • Respectful of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Able to work with people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Interested in supporting refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and local communities.
  • Able to work independently while also being part of a small and supportive team.

Previous experience in volunteering, administration, HR, recruitment, community work or volunteer management would be helpful but is not essential.

What you will gain

  • Practical experience in volunteer coordination and management.
  • Stronger leadership, communication and organisational skills.
  • Experience of recruitment, induction and volunteer support.
  • Insight into the charity and community sector.
  • The chance to work with people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • A direct contribution to supporting refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and local communities.
  • Relevant training and ongoing support.
  • A stronger CV and transferable skills for future employment.
  • A volunteer reference, subject to satisfactory involvement with the organisation.

Safeguarding and confidentiality

Shine of Hope and Peace is committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of everyone who uses our services. The Volunteer Coordinator will be expected to follow the charity's safeguarding, confidentiality, equality and data protection policies. A DBS check will be arranged where the responsibilities of the role make this appropriate.
